UOW academic leads ANSTO computing upgrade

A Lecturer in the School of Computer Science and Software Engineering, Mr Daniel Saffioti, is leading a $6 million IT upgrade at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO).

Mr Saffioti has a joint role with UOW and ANSTO. Over the next year, his task at Lucas Heights is to lead ANSTO's computing environment upgrade.

This will involve a significant network and services upgrade.

In addition, ANSTO will be moving to a ‘cloud computing model’ whereby services/applications are run centrally and are accessible anywhere.

“This model is all the rage in the industry at present,” Mr Saffioti said.

The project has been allocated funding up to $6.75 million which is to be managed by Mr Saffioti who will have a number of current and former students working on the project from the School of Computer Science and Software Engineering.

Mr Saffioti said the project was a clear indication of the strong integration between UOW and ANSTO.

Meanwhile, Mr Saffioti said that a ‘Battle of the Operating Systems’ would be held tonight (Thursday 17 September) at UOW. It will be a Mac OS vs Windows battle.

Mr Saffioti said the evening was about showing students the various opportunities that exist to help them in both growing domains.

He said that about 100 Computer Science/ IT students would be meeting to look at the various opportunities computer companies such as Apple and Microsoft present them.

“The event is designed to give students an awareness of cool innovations and emerging technologies along with the tools needed to help their degrees.

“For example, they will learn about the Apple University Consortium programs such as the Worldwide Developers Conference,” Mr Saffioti said.
