Sharyn’s 10 medal Masters Games haul

Sharyn Cahill achieved a remarkable outcome at the recent Masters Games winning seven gold and three silver medals in kayaking.

The Group Exercise Co-ordinator with the University Recreation and Aquatic Centre (URAC) competed against former Olympians to notch her 10 medal haul.

Sharyn said the result surpassed anything she had ever expected.

She competed at various locations around Sydney and described seeing the very elderly people competing as “inspirational”.

“The whole event was just such a fun thing catching up with old friends from bygone sporting days,” Sharyn said.

Sharyn won gold in the K1 marathon (40-45 years group); gold in the K2 mixed 1000m sprint (35-40); gold in the K2 mixed 500m sprint (35-40); gold in the K4 1000m sprint (35-40); gold in the K4 500m sprint (35-40); gold in the K2 200m sprint; and gold in the K4 200m sprint; and silver medals in the mixed marathon K2 (35-40); women’s white water slalom (40-45); and 1000m sprint (40-45).

Among competitors across the University of Wollongong who took part in the recent World Masters Games, representatives from UOW’s largest subsidiary, ITC, also had golden performances.

ITC Human Resources Officer, Karen Hall, now has a gold medal to her credit following success in the 35-45 years open teams’ event for squash.

And Database Administrator in External Relations, Ros Perry, high jumped her way to a gold medal.

Her sporting prowess also extended to the steeple chase where she came in second in her category.

Other medallists included Professor Julie Steele (Health Sciences) and Dr Montse Ros (Electrical, Computer and Telecommunications Engineering).]

About 28,000 competitors took part in the Games held over nine days at 72 venues throughout Sydney.

Competitors came from 95 countries and competed in 28 different sports. Turin will stage the next World Masters Games in 2013.
