Donations prove UOW’s Social Club isn’t just trivial

The University Social Club is a fun way for staff to get together at events like trivia, drinks and dinners, but president John Montagner said the club does much more than “just have a few drink sessions.”

This was demonstrated last week, when the Social Club handed over $1500 to the South Coast School for Autism – part of the proceeds from the fifth annual University Trivia Challenge.

In September 25 teams battled to see who would be crowned Trivia Champions for 2009. Organiser Justin Norris said the event was a close contest but at the end of the night the winners were the The Governators from ARD.

“We take our social responsibility seriously and try to help a range of campus and community activities,” Associate Professor Montagner said.

“In the case of the School for Autism we have supported them for two years and they also fund raise during the trivia night.”

This year at the trivia night the school made around $1700, in addition to the $1500 contribution from the social club. From the Triva proceeds, the Social Club also contributes to the Children’s Christmas Party, and has donated over $6500 over the last few years.

Last week the Social Club also presented a Merit Prize and $1000 to Zoe Grant. This award is open to students who are children or grandchildren of a current financial club member.
