OHS awards recognise work safety champions

The University’s occupational heath and safety awards were held last week to coincide with National Safe Work Australia Week, which is held from 25-31 October.

The University is a partner with Safe Work Australia and the OHS Awards help recognise people and teams that have gone the extra mile to implement health and safety requirements and influence others in raising work safety awareness in their area.

Ray Peters, Vice President OHS for BlueScope Steel, was invited to give a short address at the award presentation. He spoke about why OHS is important and some of the ways BlueScope Steel have addressed OHS.

“The University is continually improving its efforts in addressing the diverse range of OHS issues which arise out of teaching and research activities,” OHS Manager Darren Smith said.

“The awards are a positive step in recognising those individuals and teams which have improved the level of OHS in their area as well as raising the level of OHS awareness across the campus community.”

Vice-Chancellor Professor Gerard Sutton attended the event and thanked all of the Award recipients and nominees who had worked so diligently in helping the University achieve the level of success that it is has seen in the area of OHS over the past few years.
