Organisers tickled pink by fundraising success

The 2009 seventh annual Pink Breakfast held at UOW -- one of the biggest fund raising events of its kind held in NSW -- is on target to achieve its $20,000 goal.

Over the past seven years it has become a symbol of hope and support for those in the campus community who have been affected by breast cancer. Money raised will be going to the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF).

The breakfast in the University Hall attracted 545 people.

A Welcome to Country was conducted by Richard Davies followed by a research update by Pro Vice-Chancellor (Health), Professor Don Iverson, an address by Sue Cameron from the NBCF and a moving survivor speech by Luciana Rossi from Rossi Simicic Lawyers who only finished her cancer treatment late last year. She presented a strong message for the audience that self examination was a key to detecting cancer early in women under 50.

One of the breakfast features was a ‘Bollywood dance’ performed by Viji Venkat, Dr Vidiya Ramachandra, Natalie Correia, Yvonne Kerr, Pamela Murray-Jones, Megan Huisman, Emily Christofides, Richelle Hilton and Lynne Wright.

An auction was conducted by Harry Kersten from Raine & Horne.

A range of prizes were donated for raffles and auctions including:

    • A Robyn Weekes donated hand-made quilt

    • An NAB bid of $1150 for the UniCentre degustation dinner

    • NAB donating the Mark Schwarzer Socceroos’ goal keeper jersey

    • Sylvia Sutton donating a gold and diamond bracelet from Simon’s Jewellers

    • Adam Gilchrist signed cricket gear which proved hot auction items

    • Aria hair & beauty pamper pack with a family portrait shoot from Sean Maguire’s Already-Yesterday Photography

    • A Skydive the Beach tandem skydive voucher

    • Austi Delight, B & B accommodation and Austi Café voucher

    • Two NBCF pandora bracelets

    • 5 x Mary Kay $100 vouchers

    • Queens Pinch Wine

    • Dinner for two at the Lagoon Restaurant

And the Student Health Alliance for Rural Populations (SHARP) organisation contributed a cash donation to aid the event.

Competition winners were: Most Balloons – Harry Kersten’s team from Raine & Horne; Most Environmentally Friendly Table – UniCentre; and Best Dressed Table – ARD’s Vegas Strip.
