UOW representatives welcome students at Chinese partner university
Senior University of Wollongong representatives travelled to China in October to welcome new students enrolling in a collaborative course at one of UOW’s key transnational education partners Zhengzhou University (ZZU).
Over the last five years ZZU’s School of Information Engineering and UOW’s School of Electrical, Computer and Telecommunications Engineering (SECTE) at the Faculty of Informatics have developed a successful twinning collaboration.
UOW academic staff teach a number of their subjects in an intensive mode into the ZZU Bachelor of Engineering degree (majors include Electronic and Information Engineering, Telecommunication Engineering and Computer Engineering); with the opportunity for some of these students to articulate to the equivalent SECTE Engineering bachelor degrees.
To date more than 120 Zhengzhou University students of high academic standing have articulated to UOW.
The joint program is highly regarded by the Chinese Ministry of Education as a model program for international collaboration.
Faculty of Informatics Dean Professor Philip Ogunbona, UOW’s Director of Transnational Education and Alliances Dr Bill Damachis, as well as the Faculty’s Academic Program Director (China) Associate Professor Jiangtao Xi and International Officer Rachel Weine visited ZZU in October to meet with senior staff and welcome the 300 new students involved in the teaching collaboration.
During the visit Professor Ogunbona and Ms Weine gave a presentation to the first-year students, while a number of forums were held for current ZZU students and their parents to learn about Australia and the UOW Bachelor of Engineering program.
During their stay at ZZU the UOW delegation also met Australian Ambassador to China Dr Geoff Raby, who was also visiting the university. Dr Raby also met with ZZU staff and students involved with the UOW collaborative program.
Discussions during the visit focused on how the Faculty can deepen relations and expand the program as well as further extend research collaboration between the two universities.
