Students’ creative skills were on display at two trade shows open to the public held at the University of Wollongong on 29 October and 30 October.

The Schools of Computer Science and Software Engineering (SCSSE) and Information Systems and Technology (SISAT) conducted their annual tradeshow and research showcase on 29 October.

Projects came from a diverse range of areas including artificial intelligence, gaming, multimedia, networking, productivity, robotics, security and supply chain management.

This year the tradeshow was opened by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Operations), Professor John Patterson, with a special keynote address given by Andrew Powell of Sun Microsystems.

Meanwhile, a showcase of new age, technology-driven student products and projects was on display on 30 October when UOW’s School of Electrical, Computer and Telecommunications Engineering (SECTE) hosted its 12th Annual Trade Fair.

The projects were developed by second and third year Bachelor of Engineering students who have been studying the subject Engineering Design and Management and Mechatronics Design, as well as second year students enrolled in the Bachelor of Internet Science and Technology.

Projects fell into various categories such as home automation security systems or innovative teaching technologies which are hoped to be of benefit to Australian society.

The wide variety of student inventions included a boxing robot, smart heat system and the virtual interviewer.

Acting Head of School, Professor Salim Bouzerdoum, said the trade fair provided students with a special opportunity to market the products that they have developed during the year.

“The students have had to work in teams to conceptualise, design, fund and manufacture the inventions demonstrated at this event,” he said.
