Weerona College raises more than $1,000 for National Breast Cancer Foundation
When the girls from Weerona College get together for a girls’ night in, they not only have a great time – but they prove to be formidable fundraisers.
This year's event was organised by Weerona College residents Hanne Friis-O'Toole, Ali McIntosh, Jessica Shillington and Gabby Pluis and raised a total of $1,024 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
The event was attended by 55 young women, mostly Weerona College current and former residents and some friends from Campus East.
“Kate Friis, representing the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF), was our special guest speaker and told of her own experience with breast cancer,” Student Residence Manager from Weerona College, Leanne Robinson, said.
“Kate’s story was very moving and entertaining. The girls were given practical information about breast cancer awareness and were told of the importance of regular breast checks,” Leanne said.
Highlights of the evening were the bra decorating competition and the auction. Auction items were donated by Ella Bache Wollongong, Wollongong Entertainment Centre, Unanderra Pharmacy, Office Works and Hospital Hill Pharmacy.
In total, Weerona College residents have raised more than $3,000 in 2009 in support of The McGrath Foundation, The National Breast Cancer Foundation, Relay For Life and Beyond Blue. And this is in addition to supporting two sponsor children through World Vision.
