Gifted Illawarra primary school students spend a day at university
It may be some years yet before they consider enrolling in university but 28 academically gifted Illawarra primary school students got a taste of tertiary life yesterday (19 November) at the University of Wollongong.
The years Five and Six students came from 20 public schools throughout the Illawarra region. Many of the students are expected to progress to university.
Their time at UOW included a visit to one of the large lecture theatres where they were welcomed by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gerard Sutton.
The inquisitive children then took the opportunity to ask the Vice-Chancellor a range of questions on what happens on a daily basis at the University.
And they especially wanted to know what a Vice-Chancellor had to do!
The group’s other activities during the day involved:
• A talk on Exercise Science
• Physics demonstrations
• Tour of the University Recreation and Aquatic Centre and Sports Hub
• Biology workshop using microscopes and animal skeletons
• Talk on graphic design
