Young law talent make their case

The grand final of the Illawarra’s biggest law competition was held on 19 November at the University of Wollongong (UOW) Innovation Campus. The annual event is hosted by the UOW Law Students’ Society.

The case was set up as an appeal to the NSW Court of Appeal over a ruling about a fictitious contractual dispute between two companies over the sale of goods.

“Mooting is where two teams, the appellant and the respondent, compete against each other in a court-like situation appealing on a point of law before a panel of three judges,” President of the Law Students’ Society, Melissa Coade, said.

“Competitors go through a gruelling series of rounds, involving months of research and preparation,” Ms Coade said.

One of the grand final judges was Barry Collier, MP, Parliamentary Secretary Assisting the Attorney-General and State Member for Miranda.

“Competitions like this provide a fantastic opportunity for legal students to gain practical skills before entering the legal industry,” Mr Collier said.

"It’s great to see a performance of legal wit and rigour in what has been a culmination of weeks of preparation and hard work.”

Mr Collier congratulated the winners of the competition Alexandra Payne and Nicola Sanchez on their success and in their future endeavours.
