Students undertake ‘dare to dream’ campaign

Management and marketing students have begun working with local not-for-profit organisations --Wollongong Police and Community Youth Club (PCYC) and the Illawarra Multicultural Services --on the practical component for one of their public relations courses.

Senior Lecturer in the School of Management and Marketing and Co-Director of the Marketing Research Innovation Centre, Dr Lois Burgess, said the students’ target group this semester was youth from disadvantaged/lower socio-economic backgrounds.

She said the campaign the students will develop is around the theme of ‘Daring to Dream’

“The aim is to showcase what is possible through education which supports UOW and the government’s focus on encouraging young people from lower socio-economic backgrounds into such areas as university, sport and music,” Dr Burgess said.

Students will develop a strategy as the assessment component and organise an event to showcase what is available to young people from these groups and others in the community.

A fundraiser will also be held to assist with development of programs with the Police and Community Youth Club and Illawarra Multicultural Services.

A representative from the Police and Community Youth Club was on campus yesterday (27 July) to talk with students about the campaign.
