University of Wollongong and Caringbah High School announce strategic partnership

15 December 2000

The University of Wollongong and Caringbah High School will develop a key strategic partnership which will allow Caringbah High School students to participate in special programs that are offered at the selective high school and university from 2001.

It is envisaged that the arrangements will mean other schools in Sutherland Shire will also have greater opportunity to benefit from closer co-operation with the University.

The Principal of Caringbah High School, Mr Terry Wylie, said the programs would be designed to enrich students’ learning experiences and encourage them to develop fully their specific talents.

"Initially these programs will be developed in the areas of science and the humanities and may take the form of learning enrichment weekends with the aim of identifying and facilitating the learning process for these students," Mr Wylie said.

On-line learning would be offered to junior and senior school students. The University of Wollongong won its second University of the Year Award (2000-2001) for preparing graduates for the e-world with on-line learning as an integral part of achieving this award.

The partnership will also provide training and development opportunities for teachers to participate in collaborative programs with University staff in regard to the New HSC, assessment and educational leadership.

Plans are also under way which could see Caringbah High School students receiving credit towards their University of Wollongong degree on successful completion of the specific science/humanities programs.

University of Wollongong Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gerard Sutton, said the enrichment program had his full support as it confirmed the University’s commitment to the students and schools of the Sutherland Shire.

At the same time, Mr Wylie said the first-hand experience with UOW would provide students with the option of experiencing the true strengths of the University, its staff and quality programs.
