Canadian
Government guests at UOW seminar
10 May 2001
The Canadian Consul General, Mr John Mundy, and other members of the Canadian
Government will be guests of honour at a Canadian Studies Seminar hosted by the
Centre for Canadian-Australian Studies at the University of Wollongong tomorrow
(Friday 11 May ).
The seminar will begin with a book launch of Associate Professor Gerry Turcotte's
new novel Flying in Silence published by Brandl & Schlesinger. Professor Turcotte
is the Director of the Centre. This will be followed by presentations on topics
such as 'Television Commercials and National Identity in a Global Economy', 'The
Image and its Reality' and 'Foundations of the Modern Treaty Process in Canada'.
The Canadian Consul General, John Mundy, will also present an International Council
for Canadian Studies (ICCS) Certificate of Merit to Professor Don Beer.
The Centre for Canadian-Australian Studies at the University of Wollongong is
affiliated with the Institute of Social Change and Critical Inquiry and is dedicated
to comparative and interdisciplinary study related to Canada and particularly
to comparative study between Australia and Canada. It is only the second Canadian
Studies Centre to be established in Australia.
Despite its youth, Wollongong's Centre for Canadian-Australian Studies has already
established a variety of industry, community and government partnerships and been
involved with a diverse array of events and publications including, most recently,
the hosting of Canadian Margaret Atwood's visit to deliver the Nortel Canadian
Studies Keynote Address. The Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs and International
Trade and Nortel Networks are particularly important supporters of the Centre
and its activities.
