Democrats Senator at Reconciliation Statement launch

29 May 2001

Australian Democrats Senator for NSW, Senator Aden Ridgeway, will be a special guest at the launch of the University of Wollongong Reconciliation Statement on Wednesday 30 May.

The launch will also include an exhibition of Aboriginal art featuring The First Stolen, Then Stolen Land by Gordon Hookey and a performance by the Bidjigal Dancers.

Part of the Reconciliation Statement reads: ". . . the University of Wollongong acknowledges the Dharawal people, on whose land our Wollongong campus is located. Acknowledgment, as well as deep appreciation, is offered to the Nowra Local Aboriginal Lands Council and the Wandandian people for their role in supporting the establishment of our Shoalhaven campus. The Walbunga, Djirranganj and Eora people are also acknowledged as the traditional owners of our Batemans Bay, Bega and Sydney Centre sites."

The Statement promises that the University will strive to create an educational environment which is genuinely inclusive of indigenous perspectives and experiences, and which is free from all manifestations of racism.
