The Illawarra Student Chapter of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy
(AusIMM) has entered a team to defend the title won at last year's National
Mining Games. This year the games will be held this Thursday and Friday at the
University of Queensland.
The games include:
- Rock drilling
- Rail setting
- Rock and mineral
identification
- Ventilation
Sponsorship has been
sought through local businesses within the minerals industry and the response
has been overwhelming with over $6,000 donated for the team's participation, travel,
accommodation and other associated costs.
The sponsors are BHP Illawarra Coal, Pybar, University of Wollongong, AusIMM Illawarra
branch, Hanna Consulting, Capricorn Coal, Seedsman Geotechnics and Advanced Mining
Services (AMS).
Before the games is a Youth Congress held at the Sheraton, Brisbane between 2
and 4 May inclusive. The congress is focused on "Diversification - Broadening
Your Horizons" allowing students to view what is on offer within the minerals
industry and also new technologies.
A new team is endeavouring to win the trophy a second time for the University
of Wollongong.
