Pedestrian
safety campaign launch
3 August 2001
Wollongong City
Council, in conjunction with the University of Wollongong and the NSW Police
Service, will launch a pedestrian safety campaign on Monday 6 August near the
University.
The "Think Before You Cross" campaign will be launched in Northfields
Avenue and will feature stencilled body outlines at appropriate entrance sites
to the University.
Among those attending the launch will be the Lord Mayor for Wollongong, Cr George
Harrison; the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Wollongong, Professor Gerard
Sutton; and Superintendent Jim Baillie from the Wollongong Local Area Police
Command.
The program aims to target one of the high-risk age groups for pedestrian accidents
(the 18-24 year-olds), so it is hoped awareness among students about road safety
will be raised.
The proportion of pedestrian accidents in Wollongong is three times higher than
for NSW.
The campaign will run through August since August has been the peak time for
pedestrian accidents over the past four years.
Time and venue
of launch: 10am in Northfields Ave, outside the main entrance to the University
of Wollongong. In case of wet weather, the launch venue will move to the UniBar.
