Promising
schizophrenia study needs volunteers

A research team at the University of Wollongong is seeking volunteers to participate
in a promising study into the treatment of schizophrenia.
SueEllen Holmes, a neuroscience research student is conducting the study with
Dr Brin Grenyer, a senior lecturer in psychology. They are seeking male volunteers
under the age of 30 who have been diagnosed with schizophrenia, are well supported
in a stable living environment and whose illness is not in an acute phase.
Ms Holmes said increasing research suggests that brain fatty acid levels are
altered in schizophrenia and that dietary oils can help to rectify this imbalance
- thus reducing symptoms and medication side effects. The influence of these
supplements will be monitored by two safe non-invasive brain scans.
Researchers at the Illawarra Institute for Mental Health and the Psychology
Department at Northfield's Clinic are investigating the potential to provide
a viable and effective adjunct to standard therapies.
Participants will be required to consume the dietary supplements on a daily
basis for three months and attend the clinic every two weeks to assess and monitor
the benefits.
Participation is free and confidential.
