Australian newspaper
"league table" lists University of Wollongong in number
one spot
15-May-2002
A special report in
today's Australian newspaper has listed the University of Wollongong
Australia's number one ranked university on a range of indicators
for undergraduate education.
Drawing on a combination
of Federal Department of Education, Science and Technology (DEST) publicly-available
indicators, The Australian report compiled by university administration
commentator, Gavin Moodie, listed UOW 25 points clear of its nearest rival,
the University of Melbourne.
The indicators included
such factors as graduate employment, undergraduate students going on to
postgraduate study, student satisfaction and progress and attrition rates
for undergraduate students.
The Vice-Chancellor,
Professor Gerard Sutton, said this result reinforced the University's
pre-eminent position in Australian higher education.
"This is a wonderful
reflection on the high quality of the University's teaching staff,"
he said.
Professor Sutton said
it was interesting to note that the top two place-getters in The Australian
table were Wollongong which was named Australia's University of
the Year for 1999-2000 and again in 2000-2001 while the University of
Melbourne gained the title for 2001-2002.
