lecturer wins Book of the Year

A lecturer from the
University of Wollongong's Faculty of Creative Arts, Mr Alan Wearne,
was last night announced winner of the Kenneth Slessor Poetry Prize in
the 2002 NSW Premier's Awards and winner of the Book of the Year
for his verse novel,
The Lovemakers. The
epic verse novel, which took 13 years to write, focuses on love and sex
in the suburbs. The novel is written in a variety of poetic forms.
The novel is a tale
of football and home extensions, love and betrayal in the suburban bedrooms
and backyards of 1960s and 1970s Sydney and Melbourne. The Lovemakers
comes in two parts.
Part One, subtitled
Saying All the Great Sexy Things, focuses on love. Part 2 is written,
but yet to find a publisher, expands into the Australia of the ÔGreed
is Good' creed of the 1980s.
