A lecturer from the University of Wollongong's Faculty of Creative Arts, Mr Alan Wearne, was last night announced winner of the Kenneth Slessor Poetry Prize in the 2002 NSW Premier's Awards and winner of the Book of the Year for his verse novel,

The Lovemakers. The epic verse novel, which took 13 years to write, focuses on love and sex in the suburbs. The novel is written in a variety of poetic forms.

The novel is a tale of football and home extensions, love and betrayal in the suburban bedrooms and backyards of 1960s and 1970s Sydney and Melbourne. The Lovemakers comes in two parts.

Part One, subtitled Saying All the Great Sexy Things, focuses on love. Part 2 is written, but yet to find a publisher, expands into the Australia of the ÔGreed is Good' creed of the 1980s.

Media please note: Alan Wearne is due to return to Wollongong from Sydney briefly today. His arrival time at this stage is uncertain.
