Minister to launch world's first digital media centre
5-August-2002 The Minister for Communications
and Information Technology, Senator Richard Alston, will launch the world's
first Sun Microsystems Centre of Excellence for Digital Media at the University
of Wollongong tomorrow (Tuesday August 6).
It will be Sun Microsystems'
first Centre of Excellence in Australia and its first centre in the world
solely devoted to digital media. Other Sun Centres of Excellence in IT
fields are located in the US, Germany, China, Canada and Britain.
Defeating worldwide
competition for a Sun Microsystems' International Academic Grant to equip
the centre, the University of Wollongong plans a global hub for the research
and development of:
- Innovative applications
of broadband technologies
- Next generation
models of interactive television delivery and use
- Advanced technologies
and educational designs for e-learning
Key to the success
of this partnership is drawing upon the established industry relations
of both Sun Microsystems and the University of Wollongong which include
WIN Television and SBS.
The Vice-Chancellor
of the University of Wollongong, Professor Gerard Sutton, said digital
media was a key research and development area for the University which
was recognised with the establishment of the multi-disciplinary Digital
Media Centre.
"This centre
draws upon our expertise in education and educational technology, creative
arts, information technology and telecommunications," he said.
The Vice-Chancellor
said the Sun Centre of Excellence in Digital Media would be integral to
the development of the University's graduates entering technology and
media-related industries.
