Musical success
for UOW composer
16-May-2002
A solo piano piece
composed by UOW academic Dr Houston Dunleavy will be recorded on a CD
compilation to be released next month and deposited in the new Library
of Alexandria in Egypt as part of the official Australian collection.
The piece 'Meditation
on Satie', originally written for the Faculty of Creative Arts production
of Tom Stoppard's Arcadia in 2001, will also be included in a recital
to be given by renowned pianist Aaron Macmillan in Alexandria in September.
This is the latest
in a string of musical honours for Dr Dunleavy, a lecturer in Sound, Music
and Production at the University's Faculty of Creative Arts. In March
his piano duet Night Music was performed as part of the prestigious Slee
Hall Recital series in Buffalo in the United States, and was warmly received
by both critics and audience alike. In addition his solo flute piece Icarus
was selected as a set work in the 2002 Australian Flute competition and
played by 11 of the best young flute players in Australia.
Dr Dunleavy said Icarus
was a programmatic piece that has had a very charmed life.
"It attempts
to portray the unfortunate Greek mythological character who flew too close
to the sun. It gradually loses control before crashing to its own earth,
ending in a fluttering of key clicks," he said.
To top off his recent
successes, Dr Dunleavy has reached a major career milestone by being offered
full representative status at the Australian Music Centre. The Centre
will accept and publish all of his submitted work in a non-exclusive publishing
arrangement and promote his work as a composer.
He is currently working
on a large work for choir and orchestra based on text from a number of
religious traditions and an orchestral work that he says is a response
to the Australian Government's immigration policy - a policy that he has
first-hand experience, as a British citizen recently granted permanent
residency in Australia.
