Athletes depart for World University Games

Four of the five University of Wollongong athletes bound for the World University Summer Games in Daegu,Korea, will be available for a photo/filming opportunity at the University tomorrow, Wednesday 13 August, when they are officially farewelled by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gerard Sutton. Time and venue: Midday in Room 304 of the Administration Building (Bldg 36). More than 8,000 athletes from over 160 nations will compete in 12 sports - athletics, basketball, diving, fencing, gymnastics, judo, taekwondo, tennis, soccer, swimming, volleyball and water polo. It is an important event for athletes striving to compete at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. The four athletes available for a photo/filming opportunity tomorrow will be: John Phillip (Basketball); Ben Denner (Swimming); Andrew Bronneberg (Tennis); and Eloise Poppett (Athletics). The missing athlete will be Rydr Tracy (Water polo). Rydr is a member of the Australian U-20 water polo team and is currently overseas representing Australia. He will join the World University Games team in Daegu. He is also a NSW water polo representative and holds a NSW Institute of Sport Scholarship. Andrew Bronneberg has captained the University of Wollongong Tennis team for the past three years (2001-2003). In 2001 and 2002 Andrew was undefeated at University level in the men's singles competition and captained the UOW team to the 2001 and 2002 Eastern University Games Gold Medal; and the 2002 Australian University Games Gold Medal. In 2002 Andrew was nominated for the 2002 Australian University Sport - East - Male athlete of the year. Two of the Team Assistant Managers, representing the Australian team, will also be present -- Cheryl Batteard and Grant Jacobs, from the University of Wollongong.
