The Rover showcases graduating student talent
Sep 09, 2003
The production of 'The Rover' opening tomorrow evening (Wednesday 10 September) at the Bridge Theatre in Coniston, is a showcase of graduating performance students from the Faculty of Creative Arts at the University of Wollongong. Set in a carnival in a Spanish city, 'The Rover' by female playwright Aphra Behn brings a contemporary style to the centuries old text, with dancing, bold martial, arts stoushes and a live DJ playing tech-trance, industrial and funky house music when four young Brits stumble into a world of hidden identities and women on the make. Aphra Behn was a highly popular playwright throughout her times and well into the mid-eighteenth Century. Her work then became sanitised and eventually fell out of popularity and into obscurity, being considered too indecent. A spate of revivals beginning in the 1970s has proved that Aphra Behn's 'The Rover' has a modern appeal. The question of the thin line between lust and love still has audiences wanting to know the answers.
