Arts students move to employer internships for first time
Sep 15, 2003
The University of Wollongong today announced it has begun delivering a new subject called Arts Internship. This is the first time in NSW that Arts students have been involved in such a program. Course co-ordinator in the Faculty of Arts, Dr Glenn Mitchell, said the course had three aims: Firstly, it seeks, probably for the first time in a BA, to place students with an employer as part of the student's university course. Secondly, it aims to show employers that BA students have a diverse range of skills, critical to the operations of a wide range of workplaces, which go beyond the traditional views of a BA degree. And thirdly, it is an opportunity to show BA students how the skills and knowledge acquired by them throughout their degree can be applied in the workplace. There are 22 students enrolled in this program that involves a combination of coursework and a work placement with an organisation. Many have been placed within the media and PR sector, while others are with shire councils, commercial enterprises and the State Government. For further information about the new program contact either Dr Glenn Mitchell (02) 4221 3723 (email:glenn_mitchell@uow.edu.au) or Mr Martin Smith on (02) 4221 3324 (email: martin@uow.edu.au).
