Lord Mayor's visit
The Lord Mayor of Wollongong, Cr Alex Darling, will visit
the University of Wollongong's Department of Chemistry tomorrow
(Tuesday, 21 October).
He will be taken on a tour of the laboratories and shown some of the important research work being undertaken. Among those meeting the Lord Mayor will be the Director of the Institute for Biomolecular Science, Professor John Bremner, and Associate Professor John Carver and Associate Professor Roger Truscott from the Australian Cataract Research Foundation. Times and places for mayoral visit: Duration -- 3pm to 4.30pm. [From 3pm to 3.15pm in Room 123, of Bldg 18; from 3.15pm to 4pm, Rooms 129 and 127, Bldg 18; and 4pm to 4.30pm, Room 107, Bldg 18]. Bert Halpern Public Lecture for 2003 The Department of Chemistry will also hold the 2003 Bert Halpern Public Lecture tomorrow (Tuesday 21 October). The annual lecture is presented by a distinguished visiting scientist on a subject in Chemistry or Biochemistry. It honours the memory of Bert Halpern, the Foundation Professor of Chemistry at the University of Wollongong from 1970-1980. In recognition of his contributions to science, he was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science in 1978. Professor David Black from the School of Chemistry at the University of New South Wales will present this year's lecture entitled "Living with Indoles". Professor Black was born in Wollongong in 1938 and after working at Monash University from 1965-1982 was appointed to the Chair of Organic Chemistry at UNSW in 1983. He has won the Rennie Medal (1970), the H.G.Smith Medal (1993) and the A.J.Birch Medal (2003) of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI). In 1990, Professor Black was the Liverside Lecturer of the Royal Society of New South Wales and also the Royal Society of Chemistry lecturer. He was President of the RACI in 1998, and was Chair of the National Committee for Chemistry from 1999-2003.Professor Black has recently been elected Secretary General of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry from 2004-2007. Time and place: The lecture will be held in the Kemira Room at UniCentre from 5.30pm on 21 October starting with light refreshments.
