Future priorities for Lake Illawarra under spotlight

A two-day symposium will be held on 13 and 14 November at the University of Wollongong that will review the results of all research activities involving Lake Illawarra.

The Oceans and Coastal Research Centre of UOW and the Lake Illawarra Authority have jointly organised the symposium entitled, "Science and Management of Lake Illawarra".

It will bring together as many scientists as possible who have worked, or are working, on Lake Illawarra so a review can be made of all research undertaken.

BHP Professor of Environmental Science and member of the Symposium Organising Committee, Professor John Morrison, said such a review would assess the implications of completed research for Lake management, and then determine what the future research priorities for Lake Illawarra should be.

"This is particularly important in light of the current development of a management plan for the Lake," he said.

The papers presented at the symposium will be published in a peer-reviewed monograph and published through UOW.

Symposium dates and venue: Thursday 13 November and Friday 14 November at the UniCentre Function Centre,Bldg 11, UOW. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gerard Sutton, will present the official welcome at 9.30am on Thursday followed by the Minister for Illawarra, Mr David Campbell, speaking on the importance of Lake Illawarra to the region. Morning tea will be held between 10.30am to 11am which could provide further photo/filming opportunities.
