UOW will be a rainbow of colours as International Week begins

Jul 30, 2004

A vibrant celebration of cultural harmony and diversity will begin next week at the University of Wollongong, as this year's International Week begins (August 2-7). Staff, students and the general community can all participate in this week-long festival of multicultural programs and activities.

Highlights:

Monday August 2, 2004 - All about food!

Monday will see the launch of the 'International Recipe Book', boasting scrumptious sweet, sour and spicy dishes from all over the world. There will also be a 'Food and Groove' session where there will be cooking demonstrations and food sampling of multicultural cuisine for all.

Tuesday August 3, 2004 - e-Phone home!

Tuesday will give International students the chance to go one step further than just calling friends and family back home. UOW will give students the opportunity to record a short video message for their loved ones, no matter how far away. The video can be viewed at the International Week website. The opportunity to send these 'video postcards' will also be available on Wednesday and Thursday.

Wednesday August 4, 2004 - Time to travel!

On Wednesday there will be an International Travel Fair, co-ordinated by the Illawarra Committee for International Students (ICIS), giving students the opportunity to discuss travel overseas and share their international experiences. There will also be a variety of Muslim cultural presentations as part of the 'Celebrating our Muslim Community' program.

Thursday August 5, 2004 - Singapore, saris and the red maple leaf!

Thursday is packed with a variety of literary and artistic multicultural celebration. Thursday is Singapore National Day where a formal cultural dinner will take place. It's also All Canada Day where a variety of accomplished and award-winning authors will be performing and presenting portions of their literary works. Thursday night will be an explosion of international music and dance - rap, classical, funk, belly dancing and much more. It will feature performances and prizes all night.

Friday August 6, 2004 - Soccer, science and work skills!

On Friday there will be an International Science Celebration as well as a Soccer World Cup Social competition where teams of five play games of 10 minutes followed by a barbecue. There will also be the International Workplace Skills Illawarra where teams of students will work with local employers to solve a real workplace issue/challenge. Employers will include BlueScope Steel, Hansons Lawyers, Dions Bus Service and Illawarra Environmental Enterprises. Host employers will select the strongest teams to compete on campus. And International week doesn't stop there.

Saturday August 7, 2004 - Film, song and dance!

The 3rd Israeli Film Festival in Wollongong will take place on Saturday, organised by the The Kibbutz Ex Volunteer Association (KEVA). The festival features the International acclaimed movie "Broken Wings", a film by Nir Bergman. The UniBar will also be offering salsa lessons to anyone willing to shake it!

All week long.

There will be free Body Jam and Belly Dancing sessions running all week.
