Wollongong's version of the Archibald Prize set to open
Aug 10, 2004
An exhibition tagged the Wollongong version of the 'Archibald Prize' will be held this Thursday (August 12) in the Long Gallery at the University of Wollongong. The HEADS exhibition of portraits is a combined staff and students exhibition of the Illawarra Institute of Technology and the Faculty of Creative Arts and is being held for the third successive year. It has proven to be a popular attraction and the current prize money of $400 is donated by the Institute of Technology and the Faculty of Creative Arts, however, ongoing sponsorship is being sought for the annual exhibition. Judges this year will be the Head of School of Art and Design, Professor Amanda Lawson, and the Director of the Permanent Collection of the University of Wollongong, Dr Guy Warren, who is a previous winner of the Archibald Prize in 1985 with his painting of close friend and sculptor, Bert Flugelman. Dr Warren said it was an important competition for students in particular because if they did well they gained the confidence to enter other art competitions like the Archibald. The competition is open to submissions of works in any media with judges looking for works with imagination and flair. Media please note: The exhibition opens on Thursday 12 August at 12.30pm in the Faculty of Creative Arts' Long Gallery when winners will also be announced. The exhibition closes on 27 August. All are welcome to attend. Entry to the Long Gallery is free. Open Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm.
