Why are our children getting fatter?
Aug 17, 2004
It's one of the biggest public health problems facing our young people and the next Uni in the Brewery presentation will address it. Obesity in children is an issue that has Australia in a frenzy over what is causing it and how it should be fixed. Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Education at the University of Wollongong, Dr Tony Okely, and Senior Paediatric Dietician at Wollongong Hospital, Jane Wishart, will explain just what has happened in a day in the life of a child over the past 20 years to cause this increase in child obesity. The topic of their presentation is 'Why are our children getting fatter?' They will address why this epidemic will be more difficult to treat because of the nature of the factors that influence it and will discuss what can be done (and what is currently being done) to promote healthy eating and physical activity among children. Most importantly, they will discuss what it will take to halt the problem at an institutional and societal level.
