British Lord and economist to present special seminar

A Labour Life Peer in the House of Lords and internationally renowned economist will be the guest speaker at a seminar to be held at the University of Wollongong on Monday (23 August). Lord Meghnad Desai will present a seminar on the topic "New anti-capitalist movement, civil society and global finance" on behalf of UOW's Centre for Asia Pacific Social Transformation Studies (CAPSTRANS). He has taught at the London School of Economics since 1965 and was made a Professor of Economics in 1983 and in 1992 he established the Centre for the Study of Global Governance, of which he is Director. A leading member of the Asian community in the United Kingdom, Lord Desai has also acted as a consultant to a range of bodies such as various United Nations projects including those investigating poverty and social progress. He has held a number of international visiting professorships and fellowships. Lord Desai's particular research interests include: Inflation, unemployment, monetary theory, applied econometrics, famine, poverty, problems of political economy and Marxian economics, international economic development, Indian economic problems, economic history, peasant studies, Indian politics, socialism and the Labour Party and Chinese economic reform. Marxian economics has been the focal point of the various books he has authored.
