* 11.30am: The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has awarded seven prestigious ABS cadetships for 2005 - and the University of Wollongong's School of Mathematics and Applied Statistics has scooped three of the national cadetships. This remarkable achievement will be acknowledged on Thursday 23 September when the three successful students will participate in a presentation ceremony in Building 19 (Arts Bldg) in Room G002. Among those attending will be ABS representative, Edward Szoldra, and the Associate Dean (Research) of Informatics and Director of Statistical and Survey Methodology, Professor David Steel. These cadetships, worth about $20,000 to a recipient, have been awarded over the past 40 years and previous holders are now in various senior positions in Australia and overseas [Further information from Professor David Steel on 4221 3823 or Dr Robert Clark on 4221 5662] * 12.30pm: Project Challenge South America presentation: In the mid-session break, Tony Elshof (Co-ordinator for UniCentre's Centre for Student Development) led 16 students on an adventure leadership expedition to Brazil, Argentina and Peru. The initiative used outdoor recreation, community service, cultural integration and experiential education as a means for personal and team growth. Challenge was a key component of the trip as students were tested physically, mentally, socially, emotionally and spiritually. Tomorrow's presentation at Function Room 4, UniCentre Bldg will include a slide show of the trip, students speaking about their experiences and a question and answer session. [Further information contact Tony Elshof on 4221 8172] * 12.45pm: A "teddy bear's picnic" will be held on Thursday 23 September on the lawn outside the University of Wollongong's Administration Bldg (Bldg 36) opposite the McKinnon pond. The Golden Key International Honour Society will be handing over knitted teddy bears to the organisation, Samaritan's Purse Australia for the section of their work called "Operation Christmas Child". This event is a lead-up to the Golden Key's new member induction ceremony to be held on Monday 18 October at the University Hall. [Further information from Claudia Perry-Beltrame on 4221 3562]
