Filming/photo opportunities for 4 November

***State-of-the-art research centre to open

A dedicated Faculty of Commerce Research Student Centre will be opened at the University of Wollongong tomorrow (Thursday, November 4 2004).

The centre adjoins the Faculty of Commerce building and accommodates 70 workstations organised by discipline cluster. The building has three floors, and includes seminar and presentations rooms and a fully equipped kitchen. Students will have 24 hours a day/seven days a week access to a desk, a computer, storage and a networked printer/photocopier and phone.

Faculty Research Manager, Mr David Alyward, said that the building would cater to student and staff needs and promote quality research.

"The building has been designed to foster a robust and sustainable graduate research culture within the Faculty of Commerce. As new students enrol, they will be slotted into their discipline cluster," he said.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gerard Sutton, will officially open the $2.85 million project with senior executives, faculty members and commerce students attending.

*** Federal Sex Discrimination Commissioner at UOW

Federal Sex Discrimination Commissioner, Ms Pru Goward, will visit the University of Wollongong tomorrow (Thursday 4 November) to be the guest speaker at two separate forums.

The University's EEO Unit is launching the first meeting of a new women's network at which Ms Goward will speak on "Career and Family - Making it Work.This forum will be held at 12.30pm at UniCentre Function Room 4.

Meanwhile, Ms Goward is the guest lecturer at the 2004 Economic and Social Policy Public Lecture tomorrow evening. This address is entitled: "Work/Family Issues in the New Federal Government's Agenda".

Organisers from UOW's School of Economics and Information Systems say the Annual Economics and Social Policy Lecture will be of interest to the broader social services and business community.

The lecture from Ms Goward from the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission, will focus on the enhancement of work and family issues. She will discuss how governments and nations which ignore gender issues, do so at their own peril.
