Siemens Science program - from chemistry chaos to maggots and murder
Jan 11, 2005
Cool Physics, Chemistry Chaos, Maggots and Murder. These are just a few of the activities that will be available to students when the University of Wollongong conducts the Siemens Science Experience (from January 11-13 2005) - a fun and informative science education program that involves three days of hands-on science activities for students entering Year 10 in 2005. The science program, managed nationally by the Science Schools Foundation Inc. and sponsored by Siemens Ltd., aims to introduce students to as many aspects of science, engineering and technology studies at UOW as possible, with the hope that students will continue these studies at high school and eventually at university. The program will include activities such as measuring the temperature of absolute zero, examining chemical creations and studying nanotechnology. Students will attend short lectures and undertake experiments in UOW laboratories, and will be given the chance to visit the Wollongong Science Centre and Planetarium and BlueScope Steel. Students will be travelling from all over NSW and as far as Queensland to attend the event and will have the chance to meet and interact with other interested science students. Best photo/filming time: As the first day of the program does not involve hands-on activities by the students and the second day (Wednesday 12 January) the students will be away on a field trip, it is suggested that the best opportunity for a filming/photo session is Thursday 13 January when the students will be gathered at 9am in Bldg 42, Room 101 (first year biology laboratory) for the 'maggots and murder' session involving forensic entomologist, Dr James Wallman, and also on Thursday they will be making slime during 'Chemistry Chaos'.
