Faculty of Arts to hold awards evening for outstanding students

The University of Wollongong's Faculty of Arts will hold its Annual Awards evening on Monday 9 May, recognising a number of outstanding and high-achieving students.

Prizes have been donated by the Spanish Government, the Government of Canada and the Illawarra Mercury. Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Professor Andrew Wells, will welcome the staff, students and their families and thank the attending sponsors who have contributed to the prizes.

Awards will include:

*Illawarra Mercury Prize for Communication Studies -- awarded to the student with the highest average mark in 24 credit points of Communication Studies subjects at 300 level over a 12 month period (presented by Illawarra Mercury Chief of Staff, Ms Carol Johnston)

*Mary Wade Memorial Prize -- awarded to the most meritorious candidate undertaking an honours thesis in Australian History in the School of History and Politics

*The Alejandro Malaspina Prize for Spanish -- awarded to the student with the highest mark in the Spanish Language subject Spanish for Beginners 2

*Dorothy Jones Prize -- awarded to the student with the highest average mark over one year in 24 credit points of 200 and/or 300 level English subjects

*Finnish Society Prize for Philosophy -- awarded for the highest average mark over three 300 level Philosophy subjects

*The Government of Canada Award for Canadian Studies -- awarded to the student with the highest average mark above 75% in the subject An Introduction to Canadian Writing, in the English Studies Program (presented by Manager of Canadian Education Centre and Academic Relations, Canadian High Commission, Mr Tony McKittrick)

*Campus Alumni Chapter Honours Year Book Prize -- awarded to an Honours student having the highest average mark over the past three years of undergraduate study

*University Medallist for 2004 - awarded by the faculty for a student's overall outstanding academic performance over the past three years of undergraduate study
