Accounting and finance consortium attracts acclaimed international speakers

Leading accounting academics from Europe and the United States will visit the University of Wollongong tomorrow (Friday 22 July) when the School of Accounting and Finance holds its 17th Annual Doctoral Consortium focussing on qualitative research in corporate governance. The all-day research seminar will feature discussions and presentations, and anyone interested in qualitative and critical research is encouraged to attend. Guest speakers will include UOW’s Professor Michael Gaffikin, Professor Ed Arrington from the Bryan School of Business and Economics at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Professor Jane Broadbent from Royal Holloway, University of London and Professor Niamh Brennan from the Smurfit School of Business at the University College Dublin. Professor Gaffikin is Associate Dean (Research) of UOW’s Faculty of Commerce whose areas of expertise include critical theory, history, computers and accounting and public sector accounting. Throughout his career he has served the accounting community in many capacities including being on the editorial board of several international journals, Chairman of the Australian Society of Certified Practising Accountants’ (ASCPA) National Education and Membership Committee and an Australian Vice-Chancellors’ Committee (AVCC) representative on the Public Accounting Standards Board (PASB) Consultative Committee. Professor Arrington’s (University of North Carolina at Greensboro) interests are in critical social theory and its relation to accounting and organisations as well as theories of language in the context of commerce and culture. A former Independent Fellow of the National Endowment for the Humanities, his expertise is evidenced by his publication success on a variety of interdisciplinary topics in the premier journals in accounting, as well as editorial positions with several journals. Professor Broadbent’s (University of London) research interests are broadly in the critical evaluation of the use of accounting as a form of control in organisations, particularly in the public sector. She is also interested in aspects of gender and accounting. She is currently the Chair of the British Accounting Association and is researching the role of the Private Finance Initiative in the provision of public services. Professor Brennan (University of Dublin) is Associate Dean for Research and a Professor of Management. She is also Academic Director of the Institute of Directors, Centre for Corporate Governance and an FCA Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland.
