Loftus Education Centre to host free business conference

Aug 17, 2005

On a typical working day in the Sutherland Shire, more than 65,000 people (two-thirds of the working residents), leave the shire by car and public transport to go to their place of work.

In a bid to help stem this mass exodus, UOW's Loftus Education Centre is hosting a free half-day workshop from 7.30am to 1.30pm on Thursday September 8.

The centre is running the conference in partnership with the Sutherland Shire Council which is the primary organiser.

One of the speakers at the conference will be the Dean of the Faculty of Commerce, Professor John Glynn. More than 100 people from local businesses in the area are expected to attend the "Build a Better Business" conference.

The topic of Professor Glynn's address is "Innovation and Entrepreneurship -- the challenge for SMEs". He will speak about learning how to differentiate between a good idea and a real business opportunity.

Innovation and entrepreneurship are two of the new 'buzz' words often cited as hallmarks of a successful business. Professor Glynn will address the question of what are the challenges for SMEs in attempting to be entrepreneurial and, at the same time, innovative.

The Mayor of Sutherland Shire Council, Kevin Schreiber, will make the opening address at 8am.

Reservations for the conference can be made by phoning (02) 9545 7709 or emailling conference@sshed.com.au
