UOW presents bionics at the Brewery
Oct 06, 2005
This month’s ‘Uni in the Brewery’ will be all about bionics, body movements and beer. Speakers from University of Wollongong’s Intelligent Polymer Research Institute (IPRI) will break down bionics and discuss the exciting new developments that are revolutionising the field when UOW presents the latest ‘Uni in the Brewery’ session on Wednesday 12 October. Bionics is the interfacing of biology and electronics and requires the design and development of new materials that enable bio-functions to be monitored and controlled. Speakers will include Director of IPRI Professor Gordon Wallace, Dr Andrew Minett and Dr Simon Moulton. Dr Minett, who has accepted a prestigious ARC QEII Fellowship at UOW, will discuss how we seek materials capable of complex molecular recognition capabilities that possess and retain electronic properties. He will speak about recently discovered carbon nanotubes that provide a ‘beautiful’ platform for such adventures. Dr Moulton will present exciting new developments in biocompatible materials capable of sustaining mammalian cell growth. He will also look at muscle fibres in an interactive session. Interactive Session: 'Bionics' will be illustrated at the Brewery using sensors integrated into a glove. Controlling body movement will be demonstrated using wearable artificial muscle fibres. Where: Five Islands Brewery, Eastern end of the WIN Entertainment Centre (Cnr Harbour and Crown Streets) Wollongong When: 5:30pm - 6:30pm, Wednesday 12 October Cost: Free For further information: Visit Uni in the Brewery or contact Research Promotions Officer Vicky Wallace on 0422 471 031
