Men and masculinity under the spotlight
Nov 16, 2005
A new book which provides an important contribution to contemporary understandings of men and masculinity will be launched at the University of Wollongong on Thursday 17 November. “Challenging Hegemonic Masculinity” (Routledge publishers) by Dr Richard Howson from UOW's School of Social Sciences, Media and Communication presents a detailed examination of hegemonic masculinity and its interpretations. [Hegemony refers to the processes by which a dominant culture maintains its dominant position]. Dr Howson said that in the past 20 years there has been a growing interest in the issues surrounding men and masculinity. Driven primarily by the second-wave feminist critique of the legitimacy (or hegemony) of masculine practice and culture, the hegemony of men in social spheres such as the family, law, and the workplace can no longer be taken for granted. Dr Howson's book covers the theory, applications and analysis of various topical issues which draws out new possibilities for social justice in gender. Professor Peter Beilharz from LaTrobe University will launch the book. When: 5pm, Thursday 17 November Where: Faculty of Arts, Building 19, Room 1047 Further information: Contact Dr Richard Howson on 4221 4926.
