Mid-year graduation season draws 5,000 to UOW

Jul 11, 2006

The University of Wollongong will play host to about 5,000 people this week (12 to 14 July) when it conducts its mid-year graduation ceremonies. Six ceremonies will be held over the three days. The expected attendance of 5,000 comprises about 1,240 graduands along with their families and friends.

A brief sample of some graduating stories are:

• Jennifer Algie faces the possibility of becoming a doctor and mother on the same day. The former University Medallist is receiving her PhD at the Wednesday morning ceremony for her thesis which looked at the effectiveness of different types of fear appeals in reducing speeding among young adults -- but she is also due to have a baby by July 13!

• Two women -- Marjory Macdonald and Wilma Furlonger -- will be made Fellows of the University at the Wednesday morning ceremony in recognition of their outstanding voluntary service to the University for more than 20 years as Convener and Deputy Convener of the Alumni Bookshop

• A young teenager who gained special early entry to UOW, Paul James-White, will graduate at the Thursday afternoon ceremony with a Bachelor of Mathematics Advanced (Honours)

• Margaret Chandler worked on her Arts degree for six years and has finally achieved her goal, which she did in between caring for a disabled family member. She will receive her degree at the Thursday afternoon ceremony

• Danielle McVie will receive her PhD at the Friday afternoon ceremony for her research which examined food and nutrition issues of importance among women and in popular Australian women's magazines. Her PhD had to go on hold last year with the early arrival of her baby, Lucy, who was born three months premature weighing only 990 grams. Seeing Danielle graduate will be her Scottish husband, Douglas, and daughter Lucy (both in kilts!)
