Vice-Chancellor welcomes new growth places for UOW
Jul 24, 2006
University of Wollongong Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gerard Sutton, has warmly welcomed the 210 new places provided to the University by the Federal Government. “This will provide great assistance to us in meeting high student demand,” Professor Sutton said. The Vice-Chancellor said two of the main highlights of the announcement were 130 new engineering places and 20 pre-medical program places for UOW. The University remains on track to open a Graduate School of Medicine (GSM) in 2007. To date, the accreditation process for the GSM has been positive and the University was looking forward to the decision of the Australian Medical Council expected in November. Professor Sutton said the huge spike in engineering places reflected a current undersupply of engineers in Australia. The Federal Government has announced an extra 4,600 Australian students will undertake tertiary study next year. NSW universities received a total of 1,307 new places. Overall, the biggest boost has been for nursing students with 1,467 new places followed by teaching, with more than 1,000 new places including 390 tied to training secondary school teachers.
