Reincarnated ‘Rhizome’ ready for its launch

Wollongong University Postgraduate Association (WUPA) will launch the first issue of Rhizome Magazine at the University of Wollongong tomorrow (Thursday 21 September).

Rhizome Magazine is a publication showcasing postgraduate research at the University in an enjoyable and accessible format. The 32-page glossy magazine will be released next week, and will be available free at various distribution points around the University.

The content of Rhizome Magazine includes a broad selection of articles ranging from 250 to 2,000 words in length, as well as a variety of creative works and images. All content has been submitted by postgraduate research students from a variety of disciplinary and inter-disciplinary programs at the University of Wollongong. This issue contains work from 23 contributors across such fields as Environmental Engineering, Biology, Music, Chemistry, Visual Arts, Politics, Education and Creative Writing.

Rhizome Magazine is an initiative of WUPA and is supported by the University Research Committee. It has taken the place of the previous Rhizome refereed journal. Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Lee Astheimer said the reincarnation of Rhizome in its new magazine format came as a Voluntary Student Unionism (VSU)-driven budget tightening measure.

“However, the result, edited by Josh Dubrau with a dedicated postgrad team, is a highly accessible, visually sophisticated and informative view of postgraduate research at UOW,” Professor Astheimer said.

“The team has done an excellent job of introducing research from the postgraduate perspective in a personalised and diversified way. I encourage everyone in the University and the broader community to have a look.”

The Rhizome Magazine launch will begin at 5pm tomorrow and large numbers of contributors, academic and administrative staff are expected to attend the function. Drinks, light refreshments and entertainment will all be provided. On display will be an A3 laminated version of Rhizome Magazine, plus the original artwork used to create the cover, Janelle Humphreys’ Translation to Wollongong.

Copies of Rhizome Magazine will be available at the launch, and Professor Astheimer will present the artist of the cover piece with a prize-cheque. Potential sponsors are invited to attend the launch or contact WUPA through wupa@uow.edu.au
