David Suzuki to make return visit to Wollongong

Oct 13, 2006

Wollongong will again play host to one of the world’s leaders in sustainable ecology, Dr David Suzuki, when he presents two lectures on global health and sustainability as part of a return Australian tour (14 and 16 October).

The internationally award-winning environmentalist will present a public address sponsored by the University of Wollongong at WIN Entertainment Centre on Sunday 14 October, followed by a networking cocktail event at UOW on Monday 16 October. The major sponsor of both events is Wollongong City Council.

His public address, which is supported by UOW’s Office of Community and Partnerships, will promote environmental awareness and change and will feature a lecture from NSW Environment Minister, Bob Debus. Former Federal Environment Minister, Ros Kelly, will also attend the event.

The networking event will aid formation for a regional environmental network. Dr Suzuki will also present (and sign copies of) his new autobiography and speak about the life and lessons he has learned to inspire others.

The current holder of 16 honorary doctorates and author or co-author of 42 books, Dr Suzuki is known to millions of people as the host of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s popular science television series, The Nature of Things. His eight-part series, A Planet for the Taking, won an award from the United Nations. His eight-part series, The Secret of Life, was praised internationally as was his five-part series, The Brain, for the Discovery Channel. For CBC Radio he founded the long-running series, Quirks and Quarks and has presented two influential documentary series on the environment, From Naked Ape to Superspecies and It’s a Matter of Survival.

Dr Suzuki has received numerous awards for his work, including a UNESCO prize for science, a United Nations Environment Program medal and the Order of Canada. He currently acts as Chair of the David Suzuki Foundation.
