Maths think tank to target industry problems

More than 100 mathematical and statistical experts will begin a week-long workshop on Monday 5 February at the University of Wollongong with companies being the main beneficiaries of the think tank. The overseas and Australian delegates will collectively pool their talents to solve six problems put forward by the companies such as BlueScope Steel Research, Integral Energy, Trading Technology Australia, Defence Science Technology Organisation (DSTO), Transpower NZ/ Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority of New Zealand. The workshop is being organised by Associate Professor Tim Marchant and Dr Maureen Edwards from UOW’s Institute of Mathematics and Applied Statistics. Professor Marchant said Illawarra businesses and UOW students were welcome to attend any of the sessions. Some school students from St Mary’s will be in attendance. “There is a strong electricity industry theme this year to the workshop,” Professor Marchant said. Media please note The conference opens on Monday 5 February at 9.30am in Lecture Room 1 of Building 20 (Communications Bldg).It is being opened by the General Manager Trading, Integral Energy, Mr Stephen Lowe and UOW’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), Professor Margaret Sheil.
