Groundbreaking ceremony for new indoor sports facility

Mar 07, 2007

PHOTO/FILMING OPPORTUNITY ALERT – 11am Thursday 8 March

UOW students, staff and the Wollongong community as a whole will be the main beneficiaries of a 3,000 seat multi-purpose indoor sports facility to be built at the University of Wollongong.

A groundbreaking photo/filming opportunity will be held tomorrow on the site where the $6.6 million will be built. The Federal Government has provided $4.6 million and the University is contributing $2 million from its own capital funds.

Community sporting bodies helped the University in achieving funding for the project and some of their representatives will be attending. The Federal Government will be represented by Illawarra-based Senator Connie Fierravanti-Wells and UOW Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gerard Sutton, will also participate.

A large-scale artist’s impression of the new indoor sports facility – expected to be completed by early 2008 -- will go on display for the first time.

Time for groundbreaking: 11am, Thursday March 8

Venue: Project site at UOW Oval 2 adjacent to hockey field
