UOW presents 'Photographing Cool Science'
Mar 16, 2007
A range of colourful and creative images capturing the eclectic nature and essence of science will go on display this month, when the University of Wollongong unveils two photographic exhibitions at Project Contemporary Artspace in Wollongong.
The Antarctic Photos Exhibition and the Institute for Conservation Biology and Law (ICB) Photography Exhibition will be open from Wednesday March 21 - Sunday April 1, with the official opening night taking place on Friday March 23.
The Antarctic Photos Exhibition features images of landscapes, animals and science photographed by Director of ICB, Associate Professor Sharon Robinson, while she was conducting research in the Antarctic between 1996 and 2003. Professor Robinson has been dedicated to investigating the effects of global climate change on Antarctic plants.
The ICB Exhibition results from the institute's inaugural photo competition in 2006. The competition featured 65 image entries capturing a range of staff and student research. From these images was produced a 2007 ICB calendar. About 30 of these images will feature in the exhibition.
Photographing Cool Science will be officially opened by Head of the National Parks and Wildlife Service and Deputy Director General of the Department of Environment and Conservation, Dr Tony Flemming.
The ICB was formed in 2001 and is one of UOW's major research strengths. It is unique in combining expertise in conservation law and policy with strong research in evolutionary and environmental biology. The institute conducts world-class research into the evolution, ecology and physiology of Australian biota.
