Dinner to mark celebration of artist’s life

Art luminaries and academics will join guests at a dinner at the Wollongong City Gallery on Saturday 5 May to celebrate the life of distinguished painter and sculptor, Bert Flugelman. The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Wollongong, Professor Gerard Sutton, and former UOW Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ken McKinnon, will be attending as well as previous Archibald Prize winner, Dr Guy Warren. Dr Warren won the Archibald in 1985 with his painting of Bert who is his close friend. Over 35 years Bert Flugelman has produced a diverse and significant body of work that can be seen in private and public spaces throughout Australia and overseas. Locally, Bert has made a strong and lasting contribution to contemporary artistic practice with many commissioned works located throughout the region. These include the Lawrence Hargrave Memorial Sculpture on the escarpment, Wave: Gateway to Mount Keira at UOW, and Spiral and Wave at the entrance to Wollongong City Gallery. Born in Vienna, Bert was also a popular and influential senior lecturer in fine arts within the Faculty of Creative Arts at the University of Wollongong for many years. He has been honoured as a Fellow of the University and has received an Honorary Doctorate of Creative Arts. The dinner is being hosted by the Friends of Wollongong City Gallery.
