International Nurses’ Day International Nurses’ Day is celebrated around the world every 12 May to celebrate the birth date of Florence Nightingale. The Illawarra’s celebration of this event will involve a conference to be held at the Wollongong Novotel tomorrow (Friday 11 May) which will highlight the achievements made through the collaborative efforts of the University of Wollongong and the South Eastern Sydney Illawarra Area Health Service. The event is called “Success Through Collaboration” and has attracted 90 delegates. The CEO of the area health service, Professor Debora Picone, will officially open the conference. The conference is running from 9am to 4pm. Media wishing to attend are advised to arrive at the Novotel around 8.45am. Innovation Idol Innovation Idol is to be staged at the University of Wollongong tomorrow (Friday 11 May) in Function Room 4 of UniCentre at 5.30pm. It is an initiative of the Research and Innovation Division of UOW and will demonstrate UOW research students’ capacity to develop an innovative solution to “Monday-itis – and their ability to ‘pitch’ their innovative idea. The free event will provide an interactive, entertaining and fun avenue for presenting serious aspects of the innovation process, by following the formula established in entertainment shows such as Australian Idol. Finalists will be given an unknown object and a limited period of time to develop a creative explanation of what the “product” is, what it is used for and why people should invest in it. A first prize of $1,000 is on offer. Sponsors for the Innovation Idol event are ?WhatIf! – The Innovation Company and Waples Marketing Group Pty Ltd. A representative from each of these companies will be a judge on the panel. UOW is hosting seven events in all as part of the Innovation Festival.
