Building award for new Graduate School of Medicine

The new Graduate School of Medicine at the University of Wollongong (Wollongong campus), built by Manteena Pty Ltd, has won an excellence in building award. At the recent 2007 Master Builders Association of the ACT Awards, it was announced that the Graduate School of Medicine (GSM) has won the excellence award in the category: Commercial Buildings $6 to $12 million. The building consists of two levels and is founded on bored concrete piers with a reinforced concrete structure and structural steel framing. The building fabric makes extensive use of solar tinted curtain wall glazing, masonry face brick and composite cladding to achieve a pleasing architectural balance. The GSM accommodates teaching and tutorial spaces, a lecture theatre with video-conferencing facilities, clinical skills area, consultation rooms, study rooms, administration and academic offices. The $8.25 million construction has a floor area of 2,970 square metres. It was completed six weeks ahead of time and within budget. The architect for the project was the firm Graham Bell Bowman Architects.
