Free program promises to enrich high school students’ lives
Jun 15, 2007
The University of Wollongong’s free 2007 Enrichment Program for high school students starts tomorrow (Saturday 16 June) with computer topics so popular that registrations have now been closed off. The program is conducted by UOW’s Faculty of Informatics and provides valuable insight and practical experience through workshops and lectures to students interested in the areas of computing, engineering and mathematics. It is being offered on 16 June, 23 June, 28 July, 18 August, 15 September and 29 September. High school students from Years 7 to 12 are invited to attend as many of the Enrichment Program activities as they like. All programs begin at 10.30am with a keynote speaker addressing all participants before breaking into the various ‘streams’ for the day. The workshops are delivered by staff and students from the schools within the Faculty of Informatics. The computing program topic for tomorrow is “How can I get the computer to follow my instructions?”; the engineering topic is “Towards robotic-chauffeur driven cars”; and the mathematics topic is “Problem-solving – or why mathematics is not a spectator sport”. Media please note: About 50 school participants will be available for photo/filming opportunities at 10.30am tomorrow (Saturday 16 June) outside Lecture Room 5 in Building 20 (Communications Bldg). They break into their workshop groups at 11am. For further information contact Daniel Saffioti (Computer Science and Software Engineering) on 4221 4357 or 0419 272 596 (m). Mr Saffioti will also be on hand with the high school students tomorrow.
