UOW hosts “Korea and the World Economy” conference

Jun 29, 2007

The University of Wollongong’s Centre for Small Business and Regional Research (CSBRR) will host the “Korea and the World Economy, VI: Towards Asian Economic Community” conference on 2-3 July. It is the first time this conference has been held in Australia.

In a lead up to this major conference, the CSBRR will also host the Asia-Pacific Economic Forum (APEF) conference from Saturday 30 June to Sunday 1 July. Visitors from Japan, Korea, Iran and other institutions in Australia are participating in this conference.

The 6th APEF international conference is titled “Asian Regionalism: Issues, Opportunities, Challenges and Outcomes”. The APEF is a new international economics group set up in May 2001 at the Kanwon National University, Chuncheon, Korea. Its objectives are to research, discuss and disseminate substantive findings and information on development, growth, trade, regional integration and international economic relations in APEC countries with a special focus on East Asia, South East Asia and Oceania.

The Korea and the World Economy conference will begin with remarks by conference hosts -- Manwoo Lee who is President of the Association of the Korean Economic Studies; Charles Harvie who is Director of UOW’s Centre for Small Business and Regional Research; and Yong Sun Choe who is President of the Korea Institute of Public Finance.

Sessions to follow will include trade related issues, environment, international finance, foreign direct investment, economic growth, the East Asian financial crisis, Asian economies and selected issues on the Korean economy.

The Korean Ambassador to Australia, His Excellency Chang-Beom Cho, will join other guests on the evening of 2 July at the Novotel Hotel for the Korea in a World Economy conference dinner.

Media please note: At the Korea and the World Economy conference, UOW’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International), Professor Rob Castle, will give a welcome speech just ahead of the official 9am start on Monday 2 July. Another photo/filming opportunity would be the 10.30am to 10.45am coffee break in the Communications Building Foyer.

Venues: The APEF conference is being held in the Communications Building (Bldg 20) in Lecture Room 5 and most of the sessions for the Korea and the World Economy conference are also being held in the Communications Building.
